Barbiturates

Drug class: Sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic.

General sedatives: phenobarbital, pentobarbital.

Benzodiazepines: Xanax, Ativan, Versed, Rohypnol.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Barbiturates are central nervous system depressants.

Barbs and benzos cause sedation, relaxation, reduce anxiety and have antiseizure and anesthetic effects.

The DEA classifies benzodiazepines as Schedule 4 drugs, they have less abuse potential and limited dependence.
